Founded by former Associated Press Sports Editor Byron Yake, the mission of Write on Sports (WoS) is to inspire middle school youth to write by teaching them to write about sports – a subject they enjoy immensely. During WoS programs, students learn the basics of good journalism; they apply their knowledge to writing spot stories and a feature piece during a two-week camp. The goal is to encourage students to become more confident writers. They role play, write scripts and produce videos on computers. Guest journalists and athletes hold press conferences with the students; interviewing guests is a good way to build self-confidence. In addition to camps and after-school programs, WoS holds special one-day events. A camp includes up to 30 students. The student-teacher ratio is about 4:1, giving each student personalized assistance. Teachers are certified and many are from the local school district where the camps are held. It is tuition free.
